FS:5 Learning Assessment Strategies
Episode 1: My Assessment List

Name: Chrstian Rey C. Balingao
Course: BSE- 3A
Resource Teacher: Sir Linion Simeon
Cooperating School: Isabela National High School

My Target

At the end of this activity, you will be competent in identifying and naming different assessment methods used in the classroom.

My Task

·         Observe at least three classes and make a list of the assessment methods used by teachers.
·         In my list, classify assessment methods as to conventional and authentic and alternative.
·         Describe how each assessment method was used, including my personal observations.
·         Confer with your FS teacher for the assessment list.
·         Reflect on your experience.

My Tools

As you visit schools and observe assessment practices in at least three classes, document your observations using the activity forms provided for you in this reference. For your pen-and-paper test items, customize a table of specification, and prepare the test material based on the prescriptions of the school where you do class observation.

Performance-based

Performance -based

A performance assessment is one which requires students to demonstrate that they have mastered specific skills and competencies by performing or producing something.

-today, the students were given task to create a quadrant inside the circle using illustration board.

It will serve as their output for this week. As I observed, the teacher walks along to see if the students were doing good.

-it was used to determine student’s skills and abilities.

-it was used to see what learning strategies they would do.
-it was used for them to use their knowledge critically.

Cooperative Learning

Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning is the instructional use of small groups so that students work together to maximize their own and each other’s learning.

-as I observed the 2nd year, they were group composing of 5 members. The teacher grouped them and assigns 1 leader. That time, they were given a group competition. Those who got most scores will be declared as the winner.

-it was used to improve their communication skills and their teamwork.

-it was used for them to cooperate in groups and share their knowledge to one another.
-it was used to assess them what strategies would they do.

Problem Solving

Problem Solving
The students are engaged in series of higher order thinking skills to solve problems. It helps students develop and explore the problem, extend solutions, process and develop self reflection. The problem solving was used to challenge the students to think and it motivates the students to finish the task.

-as I enter the classroom, I see students who were solving in the blackboard. The teacher test them of what have they learned during discussion. As I observed, the students were able to answer the problem and they are actively participating in solving problems.

-it was used to increase attention inside the classroom.

-it was used to determine the skills and knowledge of the students.
-it was used to see their method of solving problems.

ASSESSMENT TOOLS

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE ASSESSMENT METHOD WAS USED

Performance-based

Cooperative Learning

Problem Solving

- Performance-based assessment was used for students to create a good product, but most important is the performance of the students during the process. Did they achieve the expectation of the teacher? Did they arrive to the expected product? Did they perform well during the process?

- Cooperative Learning or sometimes referred to as Collaborative Learning. It was used to see if the students could work with certain members in a group. This form of assessment is said to be the most effective. Students here develop their interpersonal skill and improve their skills, increase cooperation, solicit ideas to each learner etc.

- Problem Solving was used to see how students make solutions to a particular problem. The student here motivates himself to arrive on the correct answer. This type of assessment also determines how students handle a problem in real-life situations and what methods would they use.

Analysis

1.         Was there a variety of assessment methods used by the teacher? How relevant was/were the assessment method/s used?
- Yes. I can say there is variety of methods the teacher is using because he said it once and observationally, he really give measuring test once a week. The method the teacher is using is truly relevant. It does not only stock up of what they have learned but he wants them to use it. The assessment method does not also eat time and is not costly.

2.         Do you think the expected students’ learning behaviours indicated in the objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment methods?

- Yes. While the students are on assessment, I have observed that they are actively engaging themselves with the activity. They are behaving in group manner. They help one another if one is in need. Through their actions, I can say that they made achieved the expected learning behaviour appropriately.

My Reflections
As a future teacher in new era, we must know the best tool to instruct and assess our students. The assessment methods we should use must always in line with our learning objectives.

I can see the teaching world a couple years from now as a very good place for student to learn with. Teachers will not let students exit the subject knowing nothing. Through the use of different types of assessment methods, it will serve as assistant to teachers to identify student’s capabilities and to assess their knowledge about a particular topic. The students will also experience acting like teachers and they will demonstrate their learned skills.
