Course: BSE- 3A
Resource Teacher: Sir Linion Simeon
Cooperating School: Isabela National High School

My Target
At the end of this activity, you will be skillful in designing process – oriented performance assessment.

MY TASK
After your observation experience you now have a deeply and principled understanding of the concepts of authentic assessment used in the classroom. You can now go through the process of designing performance assessment by the following these steps:
1.       Visit a class and identify performance-based activities.
2.       Choose one performance-based activity and study its process.
3.       Design a performance assessment plan for the activity you have chosen.
4.       Collect samples of performance-based assessment tools.
5.       Reflect on your experience.

MY TOOLS
In observing a class, take note of important observations of the performance-based activity in the classroom. Make a checklist of the important things you want to consider in your assessment planning. Use the activity form provided for you. You may use format of process-oriented assessment that you have taken in your assessment 2 class. The rubrics are part and parcel of this assessment plan.

OBSERVATION NOTES

Describe in bullets the performance-based activity you observe.

-the performance-based activity was all about puzzling tables under statistics.

-the activity requires 6 students per group to look (solve) to build the table.
-during the process, the learners are busy solving, computing and some of them are putting them are writing their answers.
-lastly, they consulted the teacher if what they have done was correct.

MY CHECKLIST

Criteria

Based on your observation, make a checklist of the important things you wish to consider in your performance-based assessment plan.

NOTES ON MY PROCESS-ORIENTED ASSESSMENT PLAN

What are the best features of my process-oriented performance assessment design?

The best feature of my process-oriented performance assessment design is the presentation part. Each group here are see how well could they explain and defend what they did.

What specific conditions are necessary for a successful use of my process-oriented performance assessment design?

Process-oriented performance assessment design must well prepare. Objectives as well as procedures and criteria must be communicated to students. It must also be properly estimated of what they have learned during the whole process.

What basic points should the user of this design consider?

The design should consider students to demonstrate the 3 domains of learning (knowledge, skills and attitudes). The task must be relevant and teachers must know how to light up the students to get motivated for this design to be effective.

ANALYSIS

Why do teachers need to give attention to the students’ process-oriented tasks? Why do they need to assess them?

Giving attention on student’s process tasks benefits both the teacher and the student. For the teachers, they need to monitor students process oriented tasks to give them a better understanding of how to improve student’s whole capacity of learning. They need to assess students because their knowledge must not stay only on the middle level but it should go deep beyond that. As it says that “learning entails not only what students know but what they can do with what they know”. They need to provide attention to them to see student’s efforts, strategies and abilities. For students, they need to be monitor to provide coaching to them that will bring the best in them.

In what conditions can the process-oriented performance assessment be used appropriately?

The process-oriented assessment could be used appropriately if:
-the assessment context is well settled.
-the students know that they are being assessed.
-students are ready.
-the tools that will be used are available.
-teacher is in condition too.

Reflection

Make reflections on your feelings and thoughts about the observations made in this FS.

Learning is by doing (John Dewey). Students learns best by doing the learning themselves. They need to experience and do things to learn. In the classroom, it is stated that one way to improve quality of teaching is to design tasks. (Tasks are duties that must be done. Therefore it requires action). As I observed, there are factors that discourages learning like students are performing tasks out of interest or just to have something to present. However, learning requires teacher’s effort to motivate students. Teacher’s need to consider all the factors that discourages student’s to learn. Designing task is one a factor that will encourage learning. Teachers should add color to his/her instruction. The expectation to the students must also be clear and communicated without intimidating them. In this manner, teachers could make a way of changing students with this approach of enhancing students cognitive skills in way students could not recognize.

FS:5 Learning Assessment Strategies
Episode 3: Log Me

Name: Chrstian Rey C. Balingao

Course: BSE- 3A
Resource Teacher: Sir Linion Simeon
Cooperating School: Isabela National High School

My Target

At the end of this activity, you will be informed on the principles of authentic assessment and its usefulness in the classroom.

My Task

Authentic assessment is an alternative way of assessing students’ learning to be able to use it, you must have a deep understanding of it. To help you reach your goal, do the following task:
1.  Visit a classroom and interview the teacher on his/her experiences in using authentic assessment.
2.       Describe how the teacher uses the authentic assessment.
3.       Write a reflective journal on the activity.

My Tools
For this learning activity, please document the information gathered from the interview with the teacher on authentic assessment. Write your documentation using the activity form provided for you.

MY INTERVIEW WITH THE TEACHER

(after class)
Me: (walking towards the teacher to sign my reflection) Sir, papirma po.
Teacher: re-write it in a black pen and give it to me in room 10. Ma’am Awingan doesn’t like red.
M: Sir, wait. Pwede po’ng pa-interview kahit saglit lang po.
T: Ok, ano yun?
M: Sir, we are asked to describe how the teacher uses authentic assessment. How did you manage? Can you give example.
T: Authentic assessment?
M: Yes, Sir. Authentic – real world task po.
T: I know. Well, assessment is form of tests, right? Example; game puzzling, just like a while, if you notice they have to restore the puzzle. Tulad din nung ginuhit nila yung trigonometric identities sa cardboard.
M: Sir, last question. Your experiences in using authentic assessment.
T: Sometimes Masaya, lalo na kapag i-oobserve mo sila. Malalaman mo ang ability nila based on result.

Analysis

What is Authentic Assessment?
Authentic Assessment is an assessment that is concerned with life-like actions. Students here are expected to apply their skills/abilities that they have learned relating to real-life situations. Authentic Assessment is said to be time consuming, but on the other hand, it is enjoyable, interesting and effective.

How was authentic assessment used? Was it used to measure learning through the product?
Authentic Assessment could either be use through process or product. In the classroom i did observed, authentic assessment used through product. Because the teacher let them graph the trigonometric identities with some set criteria’s as it relates to the product. Anyway, it was used effectively because students did well.

Reflection

What are your insights and feelings about the use of authentic assessment?
The use of authentic assessment is vital. Not only because it requires performance but also it blocks the hassle effect of pen-and-paper- test because students only review just to have a passing score. With authentic assessment, it has no only one answer and students are challenge to reason out the strategy they used.

Describe how the teacher used the authentic assessment?
Observationally, it had been presented in an effective manner. The learners are actively put themselves on task.

How did you feel about the teacher’s experience in the use of authentic assessment?

Seeing the teacher instructing what the students would do is inspiring. If all teachers would do the same way, I guess we could build a competitive society. I really feel inspired especially when he motivates his students with plus points.

What could be the gains of the students and teachers in using authentic assessment?
Authentic assessment also requires physical abilities. Both parties are benefited because it kills boredom and strengthens relationship to one another. For the teacher, she can track student’s progress using it and it also improves quality of learning. For the students, it is one way to practice their physical and mental abilities, also to overcome their pressure and boost their confidence.

Which part of the teacher’s use of authentic assessment do you feel like improving or revising?
Teacher thinks what is best for her students. That’s why the teacher I am observing is doing well. But if I would ask too, I guess it would be on the process stage, instead of instructing them, why he doesn’t give them opportunity to talk and introduce their own way doing it.

Analysis

1. Do you think the teacher’s learning objectives was appropriately assessed by your test items?
By consulting to the test paper and looking on the teachers learning objectives, I can say yes. Learning objectives implemented by the teacher are truly in line with his assessment. The test given requires memory, analyzing, understanding and solving which is also present in the learning objectives.
In providing assessments, it must always cover the learning objectives expected to students because it acts as evidence that states if the student/s meets or fail the expectation and to say that the assessments are appropriate.

2. Why do you have to study the teacher’s learning objectives prior to developing an assessment tool?
In some books, researches, experiments, lesson plans etc. Objectives are the top priorities. Our goals, expectations and aims are to be put here. Therefore it is important. In teaching, before instructing, we should have learning objectives for the class because it will serve as our basis. It is simply as, what are to assess if we do not have anything to assess.

Reflection

Write your personal reflection of thoughts and feelings regarding Peace Concept on Focus. Share your reflection with your FS teacher and classmates.
Peace in general terms is said to be the absence of conflict or war. As an individual, we can make our own concept of peace focusing to our field of expertise.

In classroom, for me peace refers to the absence of distraction during instruction whether behavioural interruptions of the students or unavailability of the instructional materials. According to studies, these are the most cases of problems we are encountering inside the classroom. Yet problems are inevitable but it could be minimize. We can attain that if the teacher is skillful. One skill that teacher should possess is the skill of planning. Teachers must always prepared. They are considered as peacemaker. They take control of problems and the state of the students is one of their top priorities. They have to plan prior instruction to make the discussion smooth. And of course, their positive relationship to their students. It will influence them greatly.
The only time we could say our peace concept is success is if the progress of students is shown.
